Pre-travel checklist: 20 things to do the week before you fly

A week before your trip is enough to get everything ready calmly. This list is split into five groups: work through them one at a time.

DocumentsMoneyLuggage

Short answer: start with documents (passport, visa, insurance), then money (cards and cash), then health (medicines), then phone and internet, and leave packing and the house for the last two days.

Documents: 1 to 5

  • 1. Passport validity: make sure it's valid for at least six months after arrival and has blank pages.
  • 2. Visa: if you need one, carry a printed copy as well as the one on your phone.
  • 3. Tickets and bookings: check names, dates and flight times, and watch out for flights that land after midnight.
  • 4. Travel insurance: save the policy number and emergency number on your phone.
  • 5. Backups: photograph every document and save it in your email or cloud storage, in case you lose your phone.

Money: 6 to 9

  • 6. Enable your card abroad: some banks block foreign transactions unless you tell them.
  • 7. Know the fees: ask your bank about foreign purchase and withdrawal fees.
  • 8. A little cash: carry some local currency for the first day, for transport and tips.
  • 9. A backup card: two cards kept in different places, so losing one doesn't leave you with no money.

Health: 10 to 12

  • 10. Your regular medicines: enough for the trip plus a few extra days, in your carry-on, with the prescription.
  • 11. A small first-aid kit: painkillers, stomach medicine, plasters and sunscreen.
  • 12. Vaccines and health rules: some countries require certain vaccination certificates, so check well before you go.

Phone and internet: 13 to 16

  • 13. Internet on arrival: decide in advance: an eSIM, a local SIM or a roaming plan.
  • 14. Offline maps: download the city map to your phone before you go.
  • 15. Apps: your airline's app, a translator, and the ride app used in that country.
  • 16. Chargers and adapter: check the plug type at your destination, and pack an adapter and a power bank in your carry-on.

Home and luggage: 17 to 20

  • 17. Bag weight: check your ticket's allowance and weigh your bag at home.
  • 18. Carry-on: pack documents, medicines and a day's clothes, in case your checked bag is delayed.
  • 19. Your home: empty the fridge, unplug devices, turn off water and gas, and tell a neighbour you trust.
  • 20. Check in: check in online the day before and choose your seat.

FAQ

Questions we get asked a lot

When should I start preparing for a trip?

Passport and visa weeks or months ahead, depending on the country. The rest of this list needs about a week, and packing the last two days.

What's most important in my carry-on?

Passport, medicines, phone and charger, a bank card and a day's clothes. These should never go in your checked bag.

Do I need printed copies of my bookings?

Not always, but a printed visa, hotel booking and return ticket help if your phone dies or an immigration officer asks for them.
