Shopping in Bangkok: the complete guide

From luxury malls to wholesale markets: where to shop, how to bargain and how to get your tax back.

BangkokSiamChatuchak

Short answer: stay near Siam or Pratunam to be next to the biggest malls and markets. Bargain in markets, not malls, visit Chatuchak on a Saturday or Sunday morning, and keep your receipts for the VAT refund at the airport.

The best malls

  • Siam: Siam Paragon for international brands, Siam Center and Siam Discovery for fashion, and CentralWorld nearby, all linked on foot or by Skytrain.
  • MBK: hundreds of small shops for electronics, phones, accessories and gifts. Bargaining is accepted.
  • ICONSIAM: on the river, with international brands and a food hall designed like an indoor floating market.
  • Terminal 21: in Asok, each floor themed on a world city, with moderate prices.

The best markets

Chatuchak: Bangkok's biggest market, on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Chatuchak Market: one of the largest markets in the world, fully open on Saturdays and Sundays from morning until about 6pm. Go early, before the heat and the crowds.
  • Pratunam and Platinum Fashion Mall: the centre for clothes at wholesale prices, ideal if you're buying in bulk or many gifts.
  • Asiatique The Riverfront: a tidy night market on the riverbank, mixing shopping, restaurants and an evening stroll.

Where to bargain, and where not to

  • In markets and at MBK: bargaining is expected. Start well below the asking price and smile; buying several items gets a better price.
  • In big malls: prices are fixed, but look for sales and tourist offers.
  • Carry cash in baht for markets, as many stalls don't take cards.

How to claim your VAT refund

Tourists can claim back part of the VAT on their purchases. The main conditions:

  • Buy from shops showing the 'VAT Refund for Tourists' sign.
  • Spend at least 2,000 baht in the same shop on the same day, and at least 5,000 baht in total during your trip.
  • Ask for the refund form with the original tax invoice when you pay, and show your passport.
  • Show the goods and forms to customs at the airport before check-in, and leave Thailand with them within 60 days of purchase.

The rules can change, so check them before you travel.

Tips for your shopping day

  • Use the Skytrain between malls instead of sitting in traffic.
  • Set aside a full day for shopping, and if shopping is the main goal, add a fourth night in Bangkok.
  • Leave room in your suitcase, or pack an empty foldable bag.

Our advice: we book you a hotel in Siam or Pratunam, steps from the malls, and Sukhumvit has many halal restaurants.
