The best island trips in Thailand

Phi Phi, James Bond Island, Krabi's islands and the Similans: what you see on each trip, when to go, and how to choose a boat.

PhuketKrabiPhi Phi

Short answer: if you only do one trip, make it Phi Phi. The best time for boat trips is November to April, when the sea is calm. Maya Bay closes every August and September, and the Similan Islands are only open from 15 October to 15 May.

Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay

Phi Phi: the most popular trip from Phuket and Krabi.

Thailand's most famous trip, from either Phuket or Krabi. It usually includes turquoise bays, time for swimming and snorkelling, and a pass by the famous Maya Bay.

  • Maya Bay closes every year in August and September to let nature recover. Boats pass in front without landing.
  • Swimming is not allowed in Maya Bay, even when it's open. You can only wade in the shallows, to protect the young sharks that breed there.
  • It's usually a full day, and much faster by speedboat than by the large ferry.

James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay

Huge limestone rocks rising from the sea, the most famous being the one from a James Bond film. Trips usually include kayaking through sea caves. Because Phang Nga Bay is sheltered from the waves, this trip often runs in the rainy season too, weather permitting.

Krabi's four islands and the Hong Islands

Krabi's islands: short trips on calm water.

From Ao Nang in Krabi, the four-islands trip visits Phra Nang Cave Beach, Chicken Island, Tup Island and Poda Island. The distances are short, so it suits families and anyone who gets seasick. The Hong Islands are known for a lagoon enclosed by rock walls.

Short trips from Phuket

  • Khai Islands: very close, good for half a day, with water that's great for children.
  • Coral Island and Racha Island: for snorkelling and quiet beaches. Racha is a little further, with clearer water.

The Similan Islands

Thailand's best place for snorkelling and diving, with some of the clearest water in the region. The national park is open only from 15 October to 15 May, and may close earlier in bad weather. It's a long day with a very early start.

Tips for your boat trip

  • Pick the season: November to April brings calmer seas on the Andaman coast. From May to October some trips may be cancelled for safety.
  • Speedboat or big boat? Speedboats are faster and visit more places; bigger boats are steadier if you get seasick.
  • National park fees are usually paid in cash on the day, so carry some baht.
  • Bring sunscreen, a waterproof bag and seasickness tablets, and check there are life jackets for children.
