Pattaya: the complete travel guide

A beach city close to Bangkok, with nearby islands and plenty for families, as long as you choose the right area.

PattayaJomtienKoh Larn

Short answer: Pattaya is about two hours by road from Bangkok and suits 2 to 4 nights. Families should stay in Jomtien or Naklua and Wongamat rather than the city centre, and not miss Koh Larn and the Sanctuary of Truth.

How to get to Pattaya

Pattaya sits on the Gulf of Thailand, about 150 km south-east of Bangkok, or roughly two hours by road. From Suvarnabhumi Airport it's also about two hours, so you can go straight there after landing. U-Tapao Airport is only about 45 minutes away, but it has few international flights.

That's why Pattaya is usually paired with Bangkok: a few nights in the city for shopping and sights, then a few nights by the sea, with no domestic flight.

Where to stay in Pattaya

  • Jomtien: a long beach that's quieter than the centre, good for families, with restaurants and markets nearby.
  • Naklua and Wongamat: in the north of the city, more upscale resorts and a calmer beach. A good choice for couples and families.
  • Central Pattaya and Beach Road: close to everything but noisy at night, and the Walking Street area is known for nightlife and isn't suited to families.

The best of Pattaya

The Sanctuary of Truth: a huge building of hand-carved teak.
  • Sanctuary of Truth: a huge teak building by the sea, covered in hand carvings. It isn't a Buddhist temple for worship but a work of art. Go in the morning, when it's cooler.
  • Koh Larn (Coral Island): 30 to 45 minutes by ferry from Bali Hai Pier, with clear-water beaches for swimming and relaxing. The best day trip from Pattaya.
  • Nong Nooch Tropical Garden: vast gardens of orchids, cacti and bonsai, with Thai cultural shows.
  • Big Buddha Hill: a wide view over Pattaya bay, best just before sunset.
  • Pattaya Floating Market: stalls, food and handicrafts along canals. An easy outing with children.
  • Aquaverse water park: a modern water park with rides themed on famous films, in Bang Saray, about 20 minutes south of the city.

Halal food and mosques

Pattaya has mosques and a good number of halal restaurants, mostly in South Pattaya and along Pattaya Second Road. Always look for the official Thai halal logo, and many larger hotels offer halal options on request. Our team sends you a list of restaurants near your hotel.

When to visit Pattaya

The best time is November to February, when the weather is milder and drier. May to October is the rainy season: showers are usually short, and prices are lower.

Our advice: Pattaya is a great addition to Bangkok when you don't have time for a flight to the islands. Tell us how many days you have and who's travelling, and we'll suggest the right area and hotel.

FAQ

Questions we get asked a lot

Is Pattaya good for families?

Yes, if you choose the right area. Jomtien, Naklua and Wongamat are quieter and family-friendly, with beaches, restaurants and things for children, away from the busy centre at night.

How many nights do you need in Pattaya?

Usually two to four. Two nights cover Koh Larn and the Sanctuary of Truth; four give you slow beach days or a water park with the kids.

Should I choose Pattaya or Phuket?

Phuket is better for beaches and islands but needs a domestic flight. Pattaya is closer to Bangkok and easier for a short trip. With only a week, Bangkok plus Pattaya is a comfortable plan.
